Looking at this differently (trying to get healthy in the new year as a busy mom)

One of my yearly goals seems to always be to “lose weight”. I’m “that” person that says they want to lose weight and then gives up on it pretty quickly when I don’t see the results I want to accomplished quickly. Add in being incredibly busy with five kids, taking care of the house, homeschooling, and all of the other commitments I have to tend to throughout the day and I just never seem to have the time to dedicate to my own health and well being. So each year, I say I am going to lose weight as some type of terrible annual tradition that I seriously need to break.

Last year I did a bit better than normal. Instead of losing weight, I really focused on getting healthy and how I felt. So that is the approach I plan to take this year. I’m going to look at this from a health standpoint and do the things that make me feel better.

A plan for the year

Even though I don’t plan on making weight loss my immediate concern, I do know that over time weight loss will happen but I want to work on my health first.

Eating better

The number one thing anyone can do to help themselves feel better is to start eating better. So that’s my main focus. I want to cut the crap as much as possible and add in all the good things.

I was diagnosed with Celiacs disease a couple of years back after dealing with severe gastric and allergy issues my entire life. Even though I finally received a diagnosis on what could be causing everything from my ridiculous IBS, to my skin allergies, all the way down to potentially playing a role in my depression and anxiety, I’ve been an idiot and have not cut the gluten out of my diet. It’s stupid on my part and something I seriously need to buckle down on and change. If not for the immediate relief, to potentially help prevent serious issues down the line. So the gluten has got to go. That in and of itself will cut out a lot of my guilty pleasures that help to pack on the pounds. Cake, cookies, brownies, breads, pasta… it’s going to be a lot harder and more expensive to eat those things gluten-free, so that will help to keep those things out of my diet or at least help me to cut down to a more rare and appropriate indulgence of these things.

Then there’s the soda. Oh man… I love nothing more than to grab a large coke from a fast food restaurant. It’s seriously my only vice. I don’t really drink alcohol because of breastfeeding. I don’t smoke. I don’t do drugs. But I’ll down a coke faster than snow cone melts in hell. That’s gotta stop. I’ve cut way back on my consumption of sodas, but I need to cut them completely out. For me, that’s probably going to be the hardest thing for me to give up.

I’m also planning on adding in a lot more fruits and vegetables to my diet. Now, I’m a veggie eater. I’ll eat pretty much any vegetable (except for celery… that ish can die in a fire) you set in front of me. And I’m bad about eating them in large portions. I guess if you’re going to binge eat something though, a vegetable isn’t a bad option. I have a hard time with fruit though. I really don’t like the taste or texture of most fruits. So I’ve got to work on getting more of those into my daily diet. If you’ve got recommendations on how to eat more fruits, let me know in the comments below please!

Gotta get moving

Like I said in A year in review, I actually really enjoy the gym. So I’m going to make sure I’m lifting weights and using the treadmill a lot more this year. Hopefully improving more of what I started to build last year. I also want to try to complete a 5k by the end of 2020. So moving and running/jogging are going to be an instrumental part of my healthier lifestyle.

Taking care of myself

I am going to start focusing more on myself this year. Sleeping better, stretching and doing yoga to relieve stress as well as build strength and flexibility, writing in my journal more, taking time to relax, building a better schedule and routine. That will all help to improve my daily quality of life. Making me a better mom to my kids. It’s not pampering myself, it’s just taking care of myself.

I think looking at this as a lifestyle change instead of a weight loss journey, I will end up being more successful. By changing the things I am eat, moving more, and taking care of myself, I know the weight will inevitably start shedding, so it’ll be a happy little bi-product of just living better.

  1. Looking forward to your Monday updates!

    I’m not sure how to sneak more fruit into a diet without putting chocolate on it, but that’s one way. Dip it in melted dark chocolate or measure out half tablespoons of chocolate per slice of whatever fruit and let them harden, then eat. 😊 maybe not the healthiest but definitely could be worse!
